Tours of the New Stanford Hospital Construction Site
Thank you for your interest in the new Stanford Hospital construction site tour program. Construction is underway to build the new Stanford Hospital facility located at 500 Pasteur Drive in Palo Alto, California. The new 824,000 square foot facility will include 368 private patient rooms (for a total of 600 beds on site), a new Level-1 Trauma Center more than twice the size of the current ED, state of the art diagnostic and treatment rooms, five gardens and a new parking structure. A pedestrian bridge and underground tunnel will connect the new building to the existing facility located at 300 Pasteur Drive. Construction of the new hospital building is scheduled to be completed in 2017. The new hospital is expected to open for patient care in 2018.
Tours of the construction site are currently being offered to Stanford Health Care employees and medical staff on the first Thursday of each month from 3-4 pm. At this time these are the only tours offered, special requests cannot be accommodated.
Tours begin at 3 pm sharp. Please arrive at 2:45 pm for required check-in and to pick up your safety gear.
ALL tour participants must wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes (work boots or hiking boots) in order to access the construction site. Participants must wear long shirts and long pants; no dresses, skirts or scrubs are allowed.

Tours are for Stanford Health Care employees or members of the Stanford University faculty or staff.

Construction Site Tour Policy
The new Stanford Hospital project (‘NSH’) includes the construction of a new main hospital facility located at 500 Pasteur Drive in Palo Alto, California. The new 824,000 square foot facility includes 368 private rooms in the new building (for a total of 600 patient beds on site; a new Level-1 Trauma Center, over twice the size of the current ED; state of the art diagnostic and treatment rooms; five gardens; a new parking structure; and a pedestrian bridge and underground tunnel to connect the new facilities with the current hospital. Construction of the new hospital is scheduled to be completed in 2017. The new hospital is expected to open for patient care in early 2018.
The New Stanford Hospital project is owned by Stanford Hospital & Clinics and managed by the Planning, Design and Construction department at Stanford Hospital & Clinics. The general contractor for the project is Clark/ McCarthy, a joint venture. The general contractor maintains all control and liability over the construction site and all access to the site must be approved by the general contractor and the owner.
Overview of Tour Procedures
All tours must be coordinated through the NSH project offices and follow the required tour procedures and safety protocols:
General tours of the NSH site are offered on a weekly basis every Thursday at 3 pm. Tours are available to Stanford Hospital & Clinics employees and medical staff. Six tour slots are available every Thursday.
A NSH project team member will host and accompany each tour group onto the construction site. Participants must sign a release form and follow all safety requirements listed below prior to accessing the construction site.
Additional tours to special groups may be coordinated directly with the NSH project team by emailing tours@SUMCRenewal.org.
Each participant must sign a Release form prior to participating in the New Stanford Hospital Tour Program. Release forms can be filled out and submitted electronically via the project website at SUMCRenewal.org/tours or in the project construction offices.
Prior to participating in the New Stanford Hospital Tour Program, participants must participate in a safety procedures orientation. This orientation is available online at SUMCRenewal.org/tours or in person at the construction offices.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Any visitor to the New Stanford Hospital construction site must comply with all PPE requirements before accessing the site. PPE requirements include: hard hat, safety vest, goggles, long pants, and hard soled boots. Running shoes will not be permitted on the construction site.
